YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, Wyo. (AP) — Two men face criminal charges for walking onto Old Faithful Geyser in Yellowstone National Park.

Yellowstone National Park staff are working to reroute backpackers southeast of Yellowstone Lake after the Brimstone Fire grew to an estimated 80 acres Wednesday evening.

Yellowstone National Park closed a backcountry campsite in the southeast part of the park due to a new half-acre wildfire Tuesday.

Yellowstone National Park has lost much of its aspen forest cover — not just to the detriment of the aspen, but to all the other species that depend on them, including many birds, black bears, snowshoe hares, porcupines and beavers. I, too, miss the aspen, its knobby white trunk standing in stark relief against the dark-barked backdrop of spruce, fir and pine that forms most of my visual diet.

Two private companies that operate the general stores, lodges and campgrounds in Yellowstone National Park received the green light to build more seasonal employee housing.

A group of Gardiner residents are pushing for new restrictions to the annual bison hunt near Yellowstone National Park’s north entrance. But at a recent interagency meeting, tribal representatives say some of these changes would violate their treaty rights.

Unsecured food has led to the death of two black bears in Yellowstone National Park this summer, with officials trying to capture a third. The severity of the issue has prompted park officials to issue reminders on the importance on properly storing food.

Park regulations require people stay at least 25 yards from all wildlife including bison, elk and deer and at least 100 yards from wolves and bears. Disregarding those simple rules can lead to to fines, serious injury or death.

A nine-year-old girl was injured by a bison Monday in Yellowstone National Park.

Yellowstone officials say about 50 people were within 10 feet of the bison near Observation Point Trail in the Old Faithful Geyser area for at least 20 minutes before it charged the group. 

A lightning-caused wildfire is burning one-tenth of an acre in Yellowstone National Park near Canyon Village. It’s the Park’s first wildfire of the year.
