BOZEMAN, Mont. (AP) — Biologists have recorded a grizzly bear sighting in Yellowstone National Park, marking the first of the year in the park.

Biologists saw the bear Saturday near Grand Prismatic Spring, a hot spring in northwestern Wyoming, the Bozeman Daily Chronicle reported.

Yellowstone National Park has started capturing bison migrating outside the park and will hold them in pens for possible slaughter as part of a population reduction program, officials said Monday.

The annual operation began Sunday and by mid-day Monday six bison had been captured as they entered the Gardiner Basin along the Yellowstone-Montana border, park spokeswoman Linda Veress said.

Restrictions on air travel out of China due to the coronavirus are already having an impact on Montana’s tourism season. Businesses in West Yellowstone say bookings by Chinese tourists are down.

 

Yellowstone National Park wildlife biologists will host Facebook Live events each Tuesday in March to commemorate the 25th anniversary of wolf reintroduction in the park. 

Among other upgrades, Yellowstone Park plans to replace 64 trailers that were built between 1960 and 1983. The park says those trailers, that annually house up to 100 employees, are extremely substandard.

Yellowstone National Park has unveiled a major initiative to upgrade employee housing, which park officials say is long overdue.

About half of Yellowstone National Park’s 800 employees live in park housing. Park spokeswoman Morgan Warthin describes the quality of that housing as, “Fair to poor.”

Yellowstone National Park officials say the coyote that attacked and injured a cross country skier Tuesday has tested negative for rabies.

The unidentified 43-year-old woman was bitten by a coyote while skiing in the Canyon Village area.

Two men pleaded guilty in December to trespassing on the cone of Old Faithful Geyser in Yellowstone National Park. 

Two wolf pups from a famous wolf pack in Yellowstone were killed by a car in the park November 19. 

Yellowstone National Park's winter tourist season begins Sunday. Beginning at 8 a.m., visitors will be able to travel the park’s interior roads on commercially-guided snowmobiles and snowcoaches from the North, West, and South Entrances.
