COVID-19 testing sites are starting to open in tourism hotspots as Montana begins its Community Snapshot Testing Initiative. The program is part of the state’s effort to detect outbreaks early as it welcomes back out-of-state visitors.

As the busy summer season gets underway in various tourism hotspots across the state, Glacier National Park’s eastern neighbor is taking a more cautious approach. Concerns about COVID-19 have left the Blackfeet Nation slow to reopen its reservation to tourists.

A section of the iconic road that traverses Glacier National Park will re-open Saturday after being closed in late August due to wildfire.

Going-to-the-Sun Road will open to vehicles from West Glacier to Avalanche by noon Saturday. Drivers should expect delays due to road construction. Some hiking trails will be closed at times for maintenance work.

Flathead County Commissioners Friday approved plans for a 100-spot RV park outside the west entrance to Glacier National Park.

With a unanimous vote by the commissioners, the company Glacier Park, Inc., is now cleared to move forward with its plan to develop 25 cabins and a 102-spot recreational vehicle campground adjacent to the village of West Glacier outside the western entrance to the park.

A proposal for a new RV park outside the western entrance of Glacier National Park goes before Flathead County Commissioners Friday.

Commissioners heard the plan from a company called Glacier Park Inc. (GPI) to build a campground with 102 recreational vehicle spaces and 25 rental cabins near the village of West Glacier on Tuesday, May 16, but held off on making a final decision so they could learn more about potential impacts to traffic.

A company proposing to develop a new campground just outside Glacier National Park’s western entrance is facing opposition from the park, some local residents and agencies.

The company Glacier Park, Inc, plans to build a campground with 25 rental cabins and 102 recreational vehicle spaces near the village of West Glacier. GPI says it will also build a new water and sewer system for the development.

Grizzly Bear Kills Person Near Glacier National Park

KALISPELL, Mont. (AP) — Montana authorities say a grizzly bear has killed a person in the Flathead National Forest just outside Glacier National Park.

Steady rain will continue for much of northwest Montana today. Many locations have already seen significant rainfall in the past 36 hours, with common amounts in the 2-3 inch range.

Persistent rainfall is creating flooding headaches in northwest Montana. A washed-out culvert just north of Apgar closed a portion of Going-To-The-Sun Road early Monday. That was just one of several heavy rain-related problems reported in northwest Montana.

When the Sheep Fire’s growth toward the town of Essex required evacuation of the town and surrounding area Thursday, residents were ready to go, and the nearby town of West Glacier was ready to help. An evacuation center was established just hours after Essex residents were evacuated.

Fire officials, evacuees and members of the community gathered in the gym of West Glacier Elementary School last night hours after the town of Essex evacuated.

More than 50 people filled the small gym as crew members on the Thompson Divide Complex explained how the Sheep Fire's recent movement made evacuation the right call.
