During a planning meeting in Columbia Falls Wednesday, people who live near the Flathead River said they’re concerned about climate change, user impacts and nearby railroad activity,

Two federal agencies are tasked with updating management of the Flathead’s three forks under the Wild and Scenic River Act: The U.S. Forest Service and the National Park Service. They say that despite the river’s unusually high water quality, threats remain.

BOZEMAN, Mont. (AP) — A recent report says visitors to Yellowstone National Park spent nearly $500 million last year in neighboring towns to the wilderness recreation area.

Recent flyovers show stabilization efforts put in place late last fall on the Sperry Chalet have been successful at keeping the outer stone walls of the scorched dormitory building standing. The extent of damage remains unknown.

Glacier National Park received nearly 400 public comments on its four concepts to rebuild the Sperry Chalet, which partially burned in the Sprague Fire last summer.

The Park Service is sitting on an $11 billion repair backlog. Crumbling roads account for about half of those deferred expenses. Tennessee Republican Senator, Lamar Alexander, is lead sponsor of a new bill to increase park infrastructure funding using revenue from energy production on federal lands and offshore drilling.

It’s the last chance for oversnow travel for skiers and snowmobilers in Yellowstone National Park this season.

Roads in the park began closing Thursday to make way for the plows that need to clear feet of packed snow in preparation for summer tourism.
