MISSOULA, Mont. (AP) — Missoula police have released the names of two officers involved in a fatal shooting earlier this month.

Sgt. Travis Welsh said Friday officers Chris Proper and Eric Weber remain on paid administrative leave while the Sept. 2 shooting death of 35-year-old Steven Gill is investigated.

Montana’s Republican U.S. Senator was in Missoula Thursday. He invited police and prosecutors to share their concerns about Montana’s meth crisis.

Sen. Steve Daines wanted straight talk on methamphetamine’s impacts on western Montana. Regional law enforcement gave him plenty to chew on.

Missoula police say they’re making progress into their investigation of a shooting incident that left two boys wounded outside a local high school Sunday evening.

Detective Captain Mike Colyer says police have recovered a small-caliber pistol they believe was used in the shooting.

MISSOULA, Mont. (AP) — A high school student who was fleeing a police officer crashed a car Friday during a chase involving gunfire, although it was not clear who fired the shots, authorities said. Nobody was injured in the chase or crash, Missoula police said.

An employee of the State Crime Lab in Missoula has allegedly stolen portions of evidence from pending drug cases.

Missoula County Attorney Kirsten Pabst declined to offer specific details, but said the situation is ongoing.

A man police were chasing as an armed and dangerous federal fugitive in East Missoula this morning is in police custody tonight after being caught this afternoon.

About 11 o’clock Tuesday morning, a car chase ended in a truck crashing into a tree at an East Missoula mobile home court. William Dale Newhoff fled that scene on foot.

The Missoula Police Department took a report Monday morning from a man claiming he’d just shot someone in a downtown apartment and was holding several hostages.

"The male demanded a $20,000 ransom. So, officers from the Missoula Police Department, the sheriff’s department and the FBI responded,” says Missoula Police Lieutenant Bob Bouchee.

The federal government says the Missoula police department has made tremendous progress in how it handles reports of sexual assault.

"In short, this community has come together to institute long-term, systemic change to protect and ensure the safety of generations to come," said Vanita Gupta, head of the U.S. Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division.

The male believed to have murdered two Missoulians on Wednesday evening died early this morning.

The Missoula County Coroner says 36-year-old Nicholas Scolatti was pronounced dead at 4:11 am. He died of injuries sustained from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Scolatti's  suspected of shooting and killing 34-year-old KTMF-TV News Director Kalee Scolatti and 46-year-old family friend Anthony Dupras.
