Seventeen Montana towns, cities and counties are sharing half a million dollars in federal grant money aimed at vulnerable populations.

Flannels, long beards and pocket Constitutions accented the crowd at an event billed as: “Freedom and Property: Cliven Bundy’s Story” in the town of Paradise Saturday night. Men posted around the Old Paradise School Gymnasium eyed the crowd and murmured security updates into earbuds, even through the opening prayer and pledge.

Earlier this month, Mineral County closed its only jail for lack of staff. Now, county officials are scrambling to replace the local sheriff who abruptly resigned this week.

The only jail in Mineral County has closed because of a lack of jailers.

The last inmate at the jail was due to be transported Wednesday as county leaders deal with the problem.

Most public safety employees, including sheriff’s deputies, remain on strike in Mineral County today. Sixteen county workers, including jail and 911 dispatch staff started picketing in front of the county courthouse in Superior Monday.
