Like thousands of tourists, businesses and locals, wildfire altered plans for some 40 artists participating in a residency program hosted by Kalispell’s Hockaday Museum of Art last summer.

State agencies are working on a proposed rule change that early next year would require every public school in the state to test drinking water for lead. One of them, Department of Environmental Quality, also proposes funnelling some of its funding into new grants to help schools pay for testing and remediation.

The last of this summer’s six public meetings on the management plan for the future of the Flathead River happens Wednesday in Kalispell.

Hosted by the Flathead National Forest and Glacier National Park, it will focus on recreation monitoring and scenery, two of the river’s outstanding remarkable values protected under its Wild and Scenic River designation.

A year-and-a-half after a mysterious, oily sheen was reported on the north end of Flathead Lake, a state agency is proposing a ban on new groundwater wells near Somers. It’s part of the cleanup plan for a local Superfund Site.
