The Montana Highway Patrol Trooper who was shot and critically wounded over two weeks ago has regained consciousness.

The man killed this week in a fiery, wrong-way crash on Interstate-90 near Missoula was a friend and law school classmate of Montana Attorney General Tim Fox.

Fox describes Martin Elison as, "A wonderful individual. An incredible guy."

Johnathan Bertsch was charged with homicide and attempted homicide for a shooting that killed one person and wounded three others.

MISSOULA, Mont. (AP) — A judge set bail at $2 million Monday for a man accused of fatally shooting one person and injuring three, including a Montana Highway Patrol trooper.

The trooper, 35-year-old Wade Palmer, was transferred to a Salt Lake City hospital after he was critically wounded Thursday.

The suspect accused of killing one man and wounding three others, including a Montana Highway Patrol Trooper, appeared in Missoula County Justice Court Monday.

Bond for 28-year-old Johnathan Bertsch was set at $2 million.

The man charged with shooting a Montana Highway Patrol trooper and three others last night was previously charged with felony assault on a police officer.
