A November contest for the U.S. Senate between Republican Steve Daines and Democrat Steve Bullock is expected by political observers to draw tens of millions of dollars in outside spending and national attention.

But first the Senate incumbent and sitting governor each face long-shot challengers in the June 2 primary.

Montana Public Radio is gathering information on all statewide primary candidates to publish as a resource for our audience. We asked all the statewide candidates to respond to the following questions via email, limiting their answers to 300 words per question. These are their unedited responses.

The money funding Montana’s U.S. Senate race has grown by the millions since the start of 2020.

According to federal campaign finance reports, Democratic Gov. Steve Bullock has drawn in a net of $3.3 million since he entered the race in early March. After some spending, Bullock still ended the first quarter of 2020 with more than $3 million in the bank.


We now know what Montana’s primary ballots will look on June 2. Monday marked the final day for Montana candidates to file for office.

Montana’s Democratic primary candidates for U.S. Senate faced off for the first time in Bozeman Feb. 21. Health care, energy and liveable incomes were discussed during the debate. 

Two more Montana Democrats are entering the party’s primary to challenge Republican Steve Daines in the 2020 U.S. Senate race.

Cora Neumann of Bozeman announced her candidacy Tuesday morning in a video.

Montana Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Jack Ballard announced Friday that he’s ending his campaign. The writer and photographer from Red Lodge says earlier this week he was diagnosed with symptoms of a heart condition.

Ballard wrote in a statement Friday that he “made a final decision to cease the campaign” on the advice of his doctor and family.

The keynote speaker at Montana Democrats’ state convention this weekend said party is going to keep on losing if they don’t do more to convince rural voters to back them. 

Heidi Heitkamp, who won a U.S. Senate seat from North Dakota in 2012, but lost to a Republican by more than 10 points in 2018 says Democrats have ignored rural America at their own peril.
