Many parents of public school students across the state are struggling with reduced pay or unemployment amid the coronavirus pandemic. School officials say that’s contributing to a spike in demand for free meals from school districts. In order to provide some relief, the federal government and the state are allowing more districts to use a program that nomally provides free meals to children in the summer.

A Missoula high school was placed on lockdown for about three-and-a-half hours Monday morning after a loaded handgun magazine was found in a school hallway.

Its companion firearm was not found with it.

Missoula County Public Schools say they are ready for a student walkout that’s set to take place Wednesday, March 14. In a statement posted online and emailed to students and their families today, the district outlined how it plans to handle the walkout.

Classes for Seeley Swan High School in Seeley Lake are being relocated about 20 miles away to The Resort at Paws up next week. Seeley Swan High is currently part of a mandatory evacuation zone for the Rice Ridge Fire.

Three Montana cities have passed school bonds for construction, including a $125 million bond in Bozeman to build a new high school and remodel the current one.

Missoula County Public School officials have suspended Sentinel High School principal Tom Blakely and Vice Principal Libby Oliver.

The unusual move comes barely a full week into the start of the 2014 school year.
