Public meetings on how the state will deal with the growing number of grizzly bears around Glacier National Park if they’re removed from the endangered species list begin this week.

Starting Tuesday, Sept. 18 in Great Falls, the meetings are about a proposed Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks rule saying Montana aims to maintain a population of at least 800 bears in what’s known as the Northern Continental Divide Ecosystem, a swath of land home to the largest grizzly population in the lower 48.

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — Wildlife officials have blamed a pair of grizzly bears in the fatal mauling of a Wyoming hunting guide on Friday, marking the seventh suspected fatal attack by a grizzly in the Yellowstone region since 2010. More than 700 grizzlies live in the region that includes portions of three states around Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks. The animals were removed from the federal list of threatened species last year. Public hunting for grizzlies was scheduled to start this month in Wyoming and Idaho. But it has been delayed by a federal judge.

KALISPELL, Mont. (AP) — State wildlife officials say a freight train struck and killed a 2-year-old grizzly bear near West Glacier.

The bear's death on Monday was noted because it had been fitted with a GPS collar after being trapped in May east of Bigfork. It was relocated to the east side of Hungry Horse Reservoir.

Grizzly bear hunts in Wyoming and Idaho scheduled to begin Saturday were temporarily halted by a federal judge in Missoula Thursday.

U.S. District Court Judge Dana Christensen issued a temporary restraining order on the hunt after refraining to rule from the bench yesterday on removing Yellowstone area grizzly bears from the endangered species list, as some were expecting.

As fall approaches, tribal and state wildlife officials are reminding Montanans to be bear aware and secure any attractants that might lead to trouble between people and bears.

A meeting in Arlee Tuesday, co-sponsored by The Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes (CSKT) and the conservation group People and Carnivores, focused on reducing conflicts between the growing population of grizzly bears — and people — in the Mission Valley.

Two more grizzly bear deaths have been reported in the Northern Continental Divide Ecosystem (NCDE),  according to Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks.

Agency spokesman Dillon Tabish says one of the bears, an adult female, was killed on U.S. Highway 2, outside East Glacier last week.
