A federal judge in Great Falls on Wednesday ordered the U.S. Department of State to update its environmental assessment of the proposed Keystone XL pipeline to reflect changes in the pipeline’s route through Nebraska.

District Judge Brian Morris’ 13-page partial order is a temporary win for environmental and indigenous rights groups who sued the federal government under the National Environmental Policy Act and the Endangered Species Act.

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — A proposal to transfer wild bison from Yellowstone National Park to a Montana American Indian reservation ran into resistance on Monday from state livestock officials who said the animals pose a potential disease threat.

NPS is proposing to send some bison to tribal land rather than slaughter.

Yellowstone National Park is trying to take a new direction in bison management. The National Park Service has a plan to shift away from its nearly-annual practice of sending bison to slaughter to control population growth.
