2018 has been the deadliest year since scientists started keeping track for grizzlies in Northwest Montana.

"We did have a record high number of mortalities," says Cecily Costello, a grizzly bear research biologist for Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks, and she’s talking about the huge swath of land in and around Glacier National Park, known as the Northern Continental Divide Ecosystem (NCDE). About a thousand bears live there.

Microsoft announced a new agreement this week to deliver broadband internet service to over 73,000 people in rural Montana and Washington who currently have slow, or no internet whatsoever.

The FCC says roughly 40 percent of rural Montanans lack access to a broadband internet connection.

Get out the vote groups worked down to the last hour to help eligible voters cast a ballot in today’s midterm election.

On Saturday at a community feed in Polson attended by nearly 200 people, Montana Native Vote organized rides to the polls, collected absentee ballots to deliver to the election office and stumped for their endorsed Democratic candidates and ballot initiatives.

The remains of a woman from the Flathead Reservation who’s been missing since last October have been identified by a North Dakota sheriff’s office.

A wildfire burning north of Hot Springs on the Flathead Reservation grew substantially over the past 24 hours, leading to the evacuation of one home.

The Garden Creek Fire is now listed at over 1,840 acres. According to Confederated Salish and Kootenai tribal fire prevention specialist CT Camel, that’s a 1,300-acre growth spurt since yesterday.

A weekend of lower temperature and higher humidity brought no substantial new wildfire starts across the state, and allowed firefighters to make a dent in existing blazes. 

Forecasters say to expect increasing fire danger and more smoke as the week progresses.

That red flag warning for the western two-thirds of Montana is set to expire at midnight tonight.

Woman Found Injured On Flathead Reservation Dies

POLSON, Mont. (AP) — A woman who was found gravely injured on the Flathead Indian Reservation over the weekend has died.

Lake County Sheriff Don Bell says the victim was 24-year-old Cassandra Harris of Ronan. She was found unconscious near McDonald Lake in the Mission Mountains west of Charlo on Saturday morning.

Officials said it appeared a vehicle was involved.

POLSON, Mont. (AP) — Four people have been arrested after a woman was found gravely injured on the Flathead Indian Reservation.

Lake County Undersheriff Ben Woods says a woman in her 20s was found unconscious near McDonald Lake in the Mission Mountains east of Charlo on Saturday morning.

A summer camp on the Flathead Reservation is aiming to grow career opportunities for young people in the tech fields.

Velda Shelby wants young adults on the Flathead Reservation to think big when it comes to finding a career.

"We have the highest unemployment rate where we have all of these statistics that they have to endure," Shelby says.  "At least if they can learn technology, coding, any aspect of it, there are more opportunities. We'll broaden their horizon so that they're able to be employed."
