Yesterday’s hot, windy red flag weather spurred the McClusky Fire east of Butte to nearly triple in size.

Fire team spokesperson Kristin Sleeper says today’s weather has been more forgiving. But the 2,887-acre blaze in the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest is expected to continue growing into the evening.

Firefighters are keeping track of further weather changes tonight heading into tomorrow, including potential gusty winds.

State Agency Looks To More Logging, Improved Forest Health

HELENA, Mont. (AP) — Montana's forestry agency is working with federal, local and private organizations to increase logging on national forests to improve forest health and decrease the risk of disease and catastrophic fires.

State lawmakers are supporting a $2.2 million request from the Department of Natural Resources and Conservation to hire people to help implement the Good Neighbor Authority program.

A wildfire burning east of Medicine Lake in the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest was discovered yesterday afternoon around 4 p.m. Forest officials estimate the Medicine Lake 2 Fire, located in the Pintler Ranger District, to be about 45 acres.

This map shows the burn severity as of August 22, 2017 for the Park Creek Fire, one of the biggest fires in the Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest this year.

The Helena-Lewis and Clark Forest lifted all fire related closures today. Several other national forests in Montana reduced fire restrictions or closures over the last several weeks.

The Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest reports a new grass and brush fire was discovered this afternoon near Lima. It’s burning an estimated 400-500 acres about 7 miles east of Lima Reservoir.

The Flathead County Sheriff's Department has issued a mandatory evacuation for the town of Essex, MT, threatened by the approaching Sheep Fire. Highway 2 is now closed from mile markers 176.8-185. The BNSF and Amtrack railroads in the area are also closed.

Activity at the site of this year’s Rainbow Family Gathering is continuing to wind down this week as a small team of revelers stays behind to cleanup and county and state officials tally up the costs.

Beaverhead Deerlodge National Forest District Ranger Russ Riebe predicted there were still about two-thousand people at the site near Jackson, Montana, down from a high of about 9700 people on the fourth of July.
