A bill named for a murdered Northern Cheyenne woman had its first hearing in the Montana Legislature Wednesday morning.

Hanna’s Act, House Bill 21, is one of several in the legislature that draws attention to the crisis of missing and murdered indigenous women and girls.

Montana lawmakers are considering a change to when drivers licenses can be suspended. Critics of current law say taking away some people’s ability to drive criminalizes poverty.

The bill draft would take away the ability of a judge to suspend someone’s license if they fail to pay court fines, costs or restitution.

A legal settlement reached Friday could have a big impact on the future of Colstrip – both to the coal-fired power plant there, and the town itself.

Some renewable energy advocates say the settlement means the Colstrip plant could shut down sooner than had been anticipated – maybe as early as 2027, instead of sometime in the 2040s. But that depends on a lot of variables, and Colstrip’s backers say it could stay open for decades.

Across Montana, 1,400 survivors of sexual assault haven’t had their rape kits processed. Since November, a special task force set up by Attorney General Tim Fox has been grappling with what to do with these kits.
