HELENA, Mont. (AP) — U.S. Rep. Greg Gianforte has intentionally misled voters and the media about his attack on a reporter last year as the Montana Republican campaigns for re-election, the reporter's attorney said in a letter Thursday.

On Sunday President Donald Trump sent out a tweet that some interpreted as encouraging violence against reporters. In a short video clip from Trump’s 2007 appearance in a pro wrestling match, he can be seen bodyslamming a man with the CNN logo superimposed over his face.

Montana's incoming congressman called for civility in politics today, four days after his conviction for assaulting a reporter who asked him a question about health care.

Greg Gianforte spoke to The Associated Press at his Bozeman home in his first national interview since winning the May 25 special congressional election.
