2018 elections

Karen Davidson (middle), 70, in Basin said she is not concerned about voter fraud in Montana because there are a “thousand little old ladies” across the state to make sure that doesn’t happen.

It takes thousands of people to make sure Montana’s elections run smoothly. Shaylee Ragar was at the polls in Basin earlier today, where she spoke with Karen Davidson, a self-proclaimed 70-year-old “little old lady” who’s been volunteering as an election official for the past eight years or so.

Flathead County went big for Republicans two years ago, voting red for every statewide and federal office. But Flathead Democrats are pushing for a blue wave from local races to Montana’s lone U.S. House seat. This afternoon we sent Nicky Ouellet to hear what voters in the Flathead are thinking on election day.

Lewis and Clark County has more than 47,000 registered voters. It’s purple — in 2016 President Trump won the county, as did some of the biggest Republican names on the ballot. But Lewis and Clark also supported Democratic Governor Steve Bullock, and most of the Democrats running for statewide office. Our Capitol reporter Corin Cates-Carney spoke with voters at the Lewis and Clark county fairground this afternoon in Helena about what the big issues are for them in the midterm election.

Voter registration is at an all time high in Montana, the latest tally from the Montana Secretary of State’s office shows nearly 709,000 Montanans are signed up to vote.

When polls opened at 7 a.m., nearly half of those voters had already cast their absentee ballots, putting state voter turnout on a path to surpass that of the last midterm election. In a surge yesterday, more than 20,000 people turned in their absentee ballots.

We've had reporters talking to voters across much of Western Montana today including these who Nora Saks spoke to in Butte this morning.

Nora Saks: Heading towards the civic center in Butte, it's snowy, there are so many people here. The roads are really greasy but there's lots of people just flowing in. One of the major voting locations in Butte. I'm going to try to catch up with some people.

As divisive campaign rhetoric reaches fever-pitch on election day, a group of clergy in Kalispell is trying to reunite their communities by hosting a pair of interfaith vigils Wednesday.

The Post-Election Vigil for Restoration was borne out of what First Presbyterian Church Community Pastor Miriam Mauritzen calls a loss of love of neighbor.
