Missoulian June Smith testifies at Monday's Missoula City Council hearing on a proposed gun background check ordinance.

Hundreds of people turned out for Missoula city council’s hearing on a proposed gun control ordinance Monday night. Most who spoke were in favor of the measure, which would require criminal background checks for most private gun sales in the city.

Right now, only gun purchases at gun stores require background checks. Among those in favor of the proposal at the meeting last night were May Fink.

"My father in law is an avid competition shooter, my family has guns, we love guns, my husband has a gun," says Fink. "I feel safe that we have a gun at the house, especially with my daughter. It’s just making sure guns stay out of the hands of people who shouldn’t have guns. And those that should have guns can obtain them fine. I don’t think it’s taking anyone’s rights away."

Kurt Black, who says he’s a federally licensed gun manufacturer and dealer in Missoula, is opposed to the proposed city ordinance.

"If you did do this ordinance, there’s so many ways around it, Hey, we’ll just go outside city limits. If people want to cause harm or obtain a firearm illegally, they’ll find a way. It doesn’t make a bit of difference."
