KALISPELL, Mont. (AP) — A former U.S. Army soldier who suffered a traumatic brain injury from a bomb blast in Iraq was the victim of a recent officer-involved shooting in Kalispell, police said.
Chief Roger Nasset said Ryan Pengelly was shot by two officers after pointing a rifle at them and refusing orders to put it down. He underwent surgery and was hospitalized in the intensive care unit.
Officers responded to a call about a suicidal and homicidal woman at Pengelly's house early Tuesday afternoon. The woman told officers she had access to multiple weapons that belonged to her son, the Daily Inter Lake reported. Officers tried to arrest her, but she resisted. Police said Pengelly and another man emerged from the back of the house. Pengelly was armed.
The officers involved are on paid administrative leave during the investigation, which is being conducted by the Flathead County sheriff's office.
The house where the shooting occurred was built by Operation Finally Home, a national nonprofit organization that builds homes for wounded, ill or injured veterans. The home was given to Pengelly and his wife in early 2013.
Pengelly is a decorated veteran who served two tours in Afghanistan and one in Iraq. Just weeks after he returned home in November 2011 his house in Whitefish was destroyed in a fire.
