Federal regulators have awarded grants aimed at solutions to local environmental and public health issues for three projects in Montana.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency grants were awarded to the Blackfeet Nation, the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes and Climate Smart Missoula.
Each grant will help fund specific projects. The Blackfeet Nation says it will use specially trained dogs to detect environmental contaminants such as fire retardant in animal droppings. The CSKT plans to use the money to bolster emergency response capabilities for environmental disasters, and Climate Smart will continue to provide air purifiers to low-income communities during wildfire season.
The awards are part of more than $14 million in environmental justice grants distributed by the EPA nationwide.
