If you're a Food Guy, now is the time to clear out last year's homemade applesauce from your cupboard, to make way for this year's batches. Applesauce lasts a long time -- even longer when you freeze it -- but you'll make headway on the old stuff if you start using it as a topping on pancakes or yogurt, or as a milk substitute when you bake cakes, muffins and some pies and cookies.
While he never cooks applesauce with sugar, Jon agrees that adding a tablespoon of maple syrup to unsweetened applesauce is a good idea with pancakes. Greg sometimes serves applesauce from the freezer before it has thawed completely, while the consistency resembles sorbet. Applesauce can substitute for milk in cake recipes. What's more, for applesauce sheet cakes, you can substitute peanut butter for half the butter in the recipe, according to Greg.
Greg wonders: "Why does the expression, 'Applesauce!' mean 'Nonsense!' or 'Fiddlesticks?' How did that happen?"
"I think people get carried away, their imaginations and also their lack of imaginations: the two of them seem to conflict at certain times and create anomalies," answers Jon.
