A resurgence of scruffy garage blues-rock.

last.fm

During the holiday season of 2011/12 it was almost impossible to avoid the three chord singalong, Lonely Boy, the first track on The Black Keys’ seventh album, El Camino.  For bandmates, Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney it marked distinct commercial success, as the song reached 64 on the Billboard Hot 100 and the album being certified a platinum record.

But Dan Auerbach’s influence is much greater than that of his own band.  As a record producer, Auerbach is becoming known for a distinct and identifiable sound.   Winning the 2013 Grammy Award for Producer of the Year, his influence ranges far and wide.  From Dr. John, through Jessica Lea Mayfield, to Michael Kiwanuka, the common link is typically soaring guitar paired with driving percussion and often intimate vocals.   And, the raucous garage rock ? It has a soulful, groove running through it!

Check out some of Auerbach’s latest projects, as well as that ubiquitous single that caught so many people’s attention:

Bombino is a Tuareg guitarist from the Saharan part of Niger:

Hanni El Khatib is a Californian singer-songwriter of Palestinian and Filipino descent:
