Pine grosbeak

We talked about pine grosbeaks on yesterday's "Pea Green Boat", and listener Qin Yu sent in a story of her recent grosbeak sighting:

My husband and I were hiking Stuart Peak trail at Rattlesnake. About 2 miles into the trail, we saw this pair of birds that were very pretty. The male was red-bodied, black wings with white steaks, the female mainly gray with some light yellow on her head and body. Guess what, they were eating snowberries! We didn't know what kind of birds they were. I took some pictures (they were not that scared of people), and searched internet after coming home. It turned out they were pine grosbeaks! We were pretty excited figuring it out :-) Just thought it was an interesting co-incidence.

Qin sent in a photo, but it was a little small to post, instead we've included another image of a pine grosbeak above.

What interesting birds have you seen this fall? Tune in to "Pea Green Boat" at 4:00 to hear more.
